warning triangle

Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) is a rewarding career and should involve a fairly straightforward qualification process. However, statistics show otherwise, with a particularly low national pass rate for the first Part 3 test, the test of instructional ability, of approximately 28%.

Effective training is the key to success. Teaching someone to drive and teaching someone to become a Driving Instructor are two totally different skills which require different competancies. Many trainers do not possess the relevant skills or experience necessary to effectively train others to become ADIs, which in turn can make the qualification process a negative, stressful and not to mention costly experience.

If you are successful you can generate a reasonable income, you can be your own boss and choose the hours that you work. If you are good with people, have held a full UK or EEA driving licence for a minimum of three and a half years (with no more than 5 points and no diqualifications) and take a pride in your driving, this could be the job for you. You are required to undergo a Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check and provide two written character references before undertaking the three part qualification process.

Our training is delivered using a structured modular-based syllabus incorporating both theoretical and practical elements. You will be thoroughly prepared to not only meeting all the competencies required to pass the ADI Instructional Test, but also to become an effective first-class instructor.

The ethos of our training methods are based around the thought processes involved in driving and the underpinning knowledge that forms the basis of effective teaching methods. Trainee Licence

The Trainee Licence is granted for a six month period and is designed to help the trainee gain the relevant instructional experience. Before you can apply for this type of licence, you must have completed a minimum 40 hours Part 3 training and be sponsored by a driving school. You then must undergo a further 20 hours training or have 20% of your lessons supervised by your trainer.

The Trainee Licence enables you to be paid for giving instruction whilst you complete your training. It is, however, perfectly possible to pass your Part 3 test without having a trainee licence so you should carefully consider all the options before committing to a training scheme.

ADI Education can offer you an opportunity to work under a trainee licence without obligation or signing a contract. You are free to take your own chosen career path once you have passed your Part 3 test, whether it be as an independant instructor or joining a local or well known franchise provider e.g. BSM, Red or AA.
